One in Six Endangered Runaways

NCMEC has found that an estimated one in six of the endangered runaways reported to it were victims of sex trafficking.

One out of six endangered runaways reported to us in 2014 were likely child sex trafficking victims – increased from one in seven in 2013.




Runaway Teens

Did you know the following about runaway teens?

1. One in seven young people between the ages of 10 and 18 will run away.
2. Youth age 12 to 17 are more at risk of homelessness than adults
3. 75 percent of runaways are female
4. Estimates of the number of pregnant homeless girls are between 6 and 22 percent
5. Between 20 and 40 percent of homeless youth identify as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual,  Transgender or Questioning (GLBTQ)
6. 46 percent of runaway and homeless youth reported being physically abused, 38 percent reported being emotionally abused , and 17 percent reported being forced into unwanted sexual activity by a family or household member
7. 75 percent percent of homeless or runaway youth have dropped out or will drop out of school

Various Types Of Shelters

Did you know there are various types of shelters for those who are homelessness or in transition?

1. Emergency shelters (with sleeping facilities) for people without conventional (public and private; permanent and temporary) housing.
2. Shelters with temporary lodging for children who are runaways, neglected, or without conventional housing.
3. Shelters for abused women and their children.
4. Transitional shelters for people without conventional housing.
5. Hotels and motels used to provide shelter for people without conventional housing.
